ART SHOWS AT THREE FREDERICK COUNTY LIBRARIES

Specifics for the Shows

The FPAA group will be mounting three library shows (Urbana, Brunswick, Thurmont) next spring.  The Delaplaine Visual Arts and Education Center will sponsor quarterly shows and the first one for FPAA will be May through July 2013. Virginia Rose Kane, manager of outreach programs of the Delaplaine, has said this could become an annual event.
Information for this show:
  • There will be one person (with perhaps one helper) designated to coordinate/curate the show for each library.
  • Publicity (posters, flyers, bookmarks, press releases, etc.) for these shows will be coordinated with that for other Delaplaine events. We will need to have a photo of representative work and a list of artists for each venue by early April. This list should include full contact information for each individual: mailing address, preferred phone number, email address, preferred library gallery venue.
  • There will be flexibility with regard to the number of paintings shown at each venue, depending on size, etc.  The Urbana library can accommodate about 30 paintings, Brunswick about 12 and Thurmont about 36. We can choose to focus on a few specific artists for each venue if that seems appropriate.
  • Paintings should be prepared with wire but sawtooth is o.k. if absolutely necessary.  Placement of the paintings will be determined by the venue “curator;” Virginia will hang the paintings and will prepare labels for each. The standard form used by the Delaplaine will be used.  Plein air paintings that have been in other shows may be shown again in these exhibits.
  • The Delaplaine will retain 20 % for members and 30 % for non members.  (You are encouraged to become a member if you aren’t already one. This kind of support is vital to the organization and makes programs such as the satellite galleries possible.)
  • The library will supply Virginia with buyer contact information or direct buyers to contact the Delaplaine. Virginia will transact all gallery sales and contact the artists accordingly. The buyer can take the painting when they pay the Delaplaine.  The artist or venue “curator” can hang a new painting in the vacant space.
  • Artists will receive a check minus commission and buyer contact info will be made available to artists.
  • If the members of the FPAA want to arrange a reception at each library that can be done. The library shows have the most traffic on Sundays.
  • The children’s librarian at each library may want to have someone from FPAA  give a presentation to children about plein air painting.
  • FPAA members wil be contacted in May to determine how many entries we will have. Once again, art will be curated and if more paintings than space are entered some art will will not be accepted. So far we have been successful in hanging almost all work that has been entered in shows.

ABOUT FREDERICK PLEIN AIR ARTISTS

History of Frederick Plein Air Artists (FPAA)

The genesis for the development of a structured plein air painting cluster was an outgrowth of the desire for artists to paint outdoors on a regular basis, in a safe environment and at inspirational locations. Using a model developed by Peter Plant, a public school art teacher, FPAA had it first outdoor painting session in July 13, 2011 at PennTerra, the farm of Barry and Monika Lucey. Since then they have painted each Wednesday, weather permitting, through November and starting up again the spring. The membership since that time has doubled and continues to grow. Presently 76 artists have signed on. It is the magic of the experience; of capturing the mood of the atmosphere, the dancing of the clouds or the brilliance of the light that brings these artists together.  It is the discussions of style, techniques and approaches that inspires and expands the knowledge of all. There is the camaraderie that emerges as the members joke about the challenges of painting outdoors and become acquainted with each other over a cup of coffee or lunch.  An ultimately there is the shared joy when someone sells their work. FPAA has surpassed its original purpose of forming a cluster, it is now a community of supportive artists who struggle at times, who are always challenged and frequently get it right.
